About - for Coaches/Activity Leaders

Respect in Sport is Canada’s only on-line bullying, abuse, harassment and neglect prevention program for coaches and community leaders. Founded in 2004 by partners Wayne McNeil and former NHL hockey player Sheldon Kennedy, Respect in Sport has been developed in consultation with the Canadian Red Cross to protect youth, inform leaders, and mitigate an organization's liability.

Respect in Sport is an ideal solution for organizations looking for cost-effective, consistent and empowering programs which can easily be delivered to your entire membership.

Respect in Sport was founded on the following beliefs:

  • Creating a safe and fun environment for all children taking part in any activity should be the #1 priority of all sport and commnity leaders
  • 99% of sport leaders are good people wanting to do the right thing
  • Few activity leaders have received formal training in the areas of bullying, abuse, harassment and neglect and require assistance from their sport or community organization to know what is appropriate and acceptable in given situations
  • All children and youth should leave the game, training or activity with a positive self-image
  • Empowering training, not a stick, is the key to creating a values-based environment
  • Training must be simple, convenient, easy to access, and affordable
  • Sporting and community organizations need to outsource these issues
  • All sporting and community organizations should be able to use one consistent solution to educate activity leaders on this sensitive and important topic

Respect in Sport programs use innovative instructional design techniques to provide an internet-based training experience that is simple, to the point and captivating for the learner. It offers full database capabilities for user access and certification and is designed to be widely accessible for all users regardless of location or speed of the internet connection. In contrast to traditional classroom training, Respect in Sport takes less than half the time, is available at the users’ convenience and gives a consistent, up to date message on behalf of the host organization.
